Your first credit card has one job: start a clean credit history without costing you anything. Rewards are nice; a fee, a trap APR or an issuer that does not report to the bureaus are not. Here is the card we would hand a first-timer in each market we rank, and why.
The ranking by country
| Country | Our pick | Fee | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Discover it Student Cash Back (students) / Discover it Secured (everyone else) | $0 | Real cash back, cash-back match in year one, automatic graduation, no fees. |
| United Kingdom | Aqua Classic | £0 | Approves thin files, no foreign fees, limit reviews after three months. |
| Canada | Tangerine Money-Back | C$0 | Cash back with bonus categories you choose; check Tangerine's official site for current rates and eligibility. Newcomers can also look at bank newcomer programmes. |
| Australia | Bankwest Zero (classic tier) | A$0 | No fee, low limit suits responsible-lending checks, upgrade path to Platinum. |
| UAE | Mashreq Cashback or a salary-band equivalent | Often waived | Approves from AED 5,000 salary, cashback on everyday spend. |
| India | Kotak 811 #DreamDifferent / Amazon Pay ICICI | ₹0 | Lifetime free; Kotak 811 approves against a fixed deposit with no CIBIL history. |
| Brazil | Nubank Mastercard | R$0 | No anuidade, fast approval, transparent app, limit grows with use. |
| Germany | Hanseatic GenialCard | €0 | Free, no foreign fees, true credit card — set it to full repayment immediately. |
What we looked for
- No annual fee — a first card should cost nothing to keep for a decade.
- Approval for a thin file — student, secured, deposit-backed or bank-data underwriting.
- Reporting to every bureau — otherwise the card builds nothing.
- A graduation path — automatic limit reviews or product changes to a better card.
The three habits that matter more than the card
- Autopay the full statement balance. Interest is the only real cost of a first card, and a missed payment is the only real damage.
- Keep the reported balance under 10% of the limit. For example, on a hypothetical $500 limit that is $50 when the statement closes. Pay early if needed; our utilisation guide explains why.
- Do not apply for anything else for six months. Let the account age; then read the no-credit-history ranking for your second card.
No card yet? Start as an authorized user
If you cannot get approved yet, or are too young to apply, being added as an authorized user on a parent's or partner's well-managed card can put some positive history on your file in the US. It works best alongside, not instead of, a card in your own name.
What your first card will cost if you carry a balance
Starter cards rarely have low interest rates, which is why habit one matters. If you are unsure how the grace period works, read how credit card interest works before your first statement arrives.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best first credit card in the US?
For students, Discover it Student Cash Back; for everyone else, Discover it Secured. Both have no annual fee and pay cash back. Check Discover's official site for current terms and how it reviews accounts for an upgrade.
Can I get a first credit card with no income?
Students can usually count allowances or part-time income; otherwise a secured card (deposit-backed) or a card secured against a fixed deposit (India) approves without income history.
What limit will my first card have?
First cards usually start with a modest limit, and on secured cards the limit is normally tied to your deposit. Many issuers review limits after several months of on-time payments. Keep reported balances low — utilisation matters more than the size of the limit.
